While nose undermines these roles, lower conchas have an important role in heating, humidification, and filtering of the inhaled air. This cycle operates in an extremely sensitive and complex balance, and sometimes the lower conchas may encounter hypertrophy for various reasons, and this constitutes the majority of cases in nasal congestion.
With the process of these problems continuing increasingly and neglecting treatment long enough, there may be some sort of problems such as hypertension, rhythmic problems in heart, heart failures, frequent throat infections due to the nasal cavity being obstructed and mouth breathing, dryness in throat, sleep dysfunctions, snoring and sleep apnea.
Reasons for nasal congestion include:
- Conchal hypertrophy (enlargement of nasal tissue)
- Septum deviation (obliquity of cartilage and/or bone structure between the nasal passage)
- Nasal valve failure
- Nasal trauma
- Adenoids
- Allergic rhinitis
- Upper respiratory tract diseasees
- Nasal polyps
- Sinonasal tumours
- Developmental and genetic problems in cartilage and bone structure
An ENT examination is obligatory for diagnosing nasal congestion. If necessary, the problem must be unearthed via radiological and other diagnostic tests and treatment should be due according to the diagnostics.
