Adenoidectomy (Adenoid Removal)

Adenoid is located in between nose and throat, growing in size usually after one years of age and reaching its maximum size in 4-7 ages. After eight years of age, it becomes smaller and normally it is not observed in examination after 13-15 years of age.

The purpose of adenoid is that it has a role in holding various microorganisms coming through the nasal tract and it is the structure that creating antibodies which are helpful in battling these microorganisms.

The adenoid may rapidly grow in size in toddlers and especially in children in kindergarten and first years of school who frequently has upper respiratory infections, and it may cause nasal congestion, snoring and mouth breathing, especially observable in sleep.

If medical treatment does not avail any relief for nasal congestion, nasal speech, snoring in sleep and sleep apnoea related to the enlargement of adenoid, it is recommended that patient undergo an surgery.

Under general anaesthesia, the surgery lasts for 30-45 minutes. The patient can be discharged the same day as surgery, after having been recommended a suitable dietary regime for the surgery.
